Exfoliating is an absolute must for keeping skin healthy and glowing. For the most part, skin knows how to exfoliate itself and occasionally using just one exfoliator should be enough and instead of having a set routine for how often you use your exfoliator.
So what exactly does exfoliation do? Well for starters, it rids your face of all the dead skin cells which contribute to an older, duller appearance. By giving your face an occasional scrub with a natural exfoliator, you’re regenerating new skin cells and helping with the circulation on your face. This is going to help you produce more collagen in the face as well which can help plump wrinkles and leave them appearing less visible.
While proper exfoliation can do wonders for the skin, over-exfoliation is one skin-care mistake almost all of us make. We incessantly scrub off dry, flaky patches of skin in an effort to take care of it but when we accidentally exfoliate too often or with a scrub that’s too harsh, it backfires big time.
Over-exfoliation can lead to redness and irritation that can wreak havoc on your skin. Believe it or not, exfoliating your face too often can also make it more dry and flakey. When there is too much friction between the exfoliant and your skin, it can destroy skin cells that are healthy and even cause a rash.
So what’s the best way to exfoliate?
Try using a natural exfoliant like a sugar or coffee scrub to make sure that you aren’t exfoliating with any harsh chemicals. They’re not only cost effective, but they’re super easy to make!
A good rule of thumb is to exfoliate once a month but it’s important to listen to your skin. When you try exfoliation the first time, you’ll notice your skin looks more youthful and vibrant almost instantly, but you want to pay attention to when that starts to fade. When your skin seems to look dull again or feels slightly rough when you’re applying moisturizer, you know it’s time to exfoliate again.
